Practise in ChatGPT
Add Sprachpass to ChatGPT, sign in, practise Hören and Lesen, and fix common problems.
You can practise Hören (listening) and Lesen (reading) inside ChatGPT. You practise in runs: a run is a set of ten questions. ChatGPT uses your own Sprachpass sign-in, so every answer is saved to your Sprachpass account, like on the website.
What you need
- A Sprachpass account. The free plan works, and its daily limits apply.
- ChatGPT on the web. We tested the Pro plan. Other plans and the ChatGPT phone and desktop apps were not tested.
- Permission to add your own connection, called a "custom MCP server". Some school or work ChatGPT accounts block this.
Add Sprachpass to ChatGPT
- 1In ChatGPT on the web, open your profile menu, then Settings, then Plugins.
- 2Choose Browse directory, then Add, then Add custom MCP server.
- 3Type the name Sprachpass. Under Connection, choose Server URL and type https://sprachpass.com/mcp. Under Authentication, choose OAuth. Leave the icon, the description and Advanced OAuth settings as they are.
- 4ChatGPT shows the warning "Custom MCP servers introduce risk." Read it, tick "I understand and want to continue", then choose Create as a plugin.
- 5ChatGPT shows a Connect screen. It lists what ChatGPT can share with Sprachpass. Choose Connect Sprachpass to sign in.
Sign in to Sprachpass
- 1A Sprachpass page opens with the heading "ChatGPT wants to connect" and "From chatgpt.com". Sign in first if Sprachpass asks you to.
- 2Check the account under "Connecting as". If it is not your account, choose "Not you?" and sign in again.
- 3If the page asks "Who is this for?", choose "Me, to practise". The other choice, "A business account", is for schools and companies that connect their own software to Sprachpass. It does not give practice tools.
- 4Read the list under "It will be able to:". It says ChatGPT can start and continue practice with you, save your answers to your History, read your History and results, and see how much practice you have left. Choose Allow, or choose "Don't allow" to stop.
- 5ChatGPT shows a message that your account is now connected.
What ChatGPT can use
ChatGPT uses small helpers called tools. You do not need to know their names. ChatGPT lists these 8 in the plugin details:
- sprachpass_get_access: your plan, the exams you can practise and how many runs you can still do today.
- sprachpass_start_practice: start a run of ten questions, or continue your unfinished run for that exam and skill.
- sprachpass_get_practice: read the run and its next question.
- sprachpass_submit_answer: save one answer and get the result, the right answer and the explanation.
- sprachpass_complete_practice: finish the run after ten answers and save the score to History.
- sprachpass_list_history: list your finished runs.
- sprachpass_get_result: read one finished run.
- sprachpass_show_practice: show the question as a card with a Play button. This works in ChatGPT on the web.
Practise Hören and Lesen
- 1Ask ChatGPT, for example: "Use Sprachpass to start a Goethe A1 Hören practice and show me the first question."
- 2A Sprachpass card shows the question, the options and a Play button. The audio starts only when you press Play. You can listen as often as you like.
- 3Pick your answer in the card and choose Check answer.
- 4The card shows if you were right, the right answer and why. Choose Next question.
- 5After ten answers the card says "All 10 answered." Tell ChatGPT to finish the practice. That saves your score to History.
Lesen works the same way. If the card cannot show a question, it says "This card cannot show this question. Answer it in the chat, or open it on Sprachpass."
Audio plays inside the card in ChatGPT on the web (we tested the Pro plan). We have not tested the ChatGPT phone or desktop app. If you see no card there, you get a link to the audio and a link to the same run on sprachpass.com.
History and daily limits
- Each answer is saved to your Sprachpass account as soon as you send it.
- A finished run shows in History on sprachpass.com, with every answer.
- ChatGPT practice uses up the same daily limit as the website.
- If you already started a run for the same exam and skill on the website, finish it there first. ChatGPT gives you the link.
Free plan, each day: 1 Hören run, 1 Lesen run, 2 Schreiben (writing) tasks and 2 Sprechen (speaking) tasks. You also get one free timed exam paper, once, if your exam has one.
Disconnect
- 1On sprachpass.com, open Account, then Connected apps.
- 2Choose Disconnect next to ChatGPT. Sprachpass asks "Disconnect ChatGPT?". Choose Disconnect.
- 3ChatGPT stops working with your Sprachpass account right away. Your History stays on Sprachpass.
To connect again, open Settings, then Plugins in ChatGPT, open Sprachpass, open the menu next to your connected account and choose Reconnect. Then choose Allow on the Sprachpass page. You can also uninstall the plugin in ChatGPT's settings.

Fix common problems
The card says "Couldn't display" or stays empty
ChatGPT sometimes fails to show the card the first time. Press Try again. It usually shows on the second try. Nothing is lost.
The card loads again after you scroll
In earlier tests, ChatGPT loaded a card again after scrolling. If that happens, the card shows the question from Sprachpass again. Your saved answers stay saved, because Sprachpass keeps them, not the card.
ChatGPT says "This response couldn't load"
ChatGPT sometimes shows this message even when the card works. Use the card, or ask ChatGPT again.
The card never shows
If the card never shows, answer in the chat, or use the link to practise on Sprachpass. You can also try turning off the ChatGPT setting "Enforce CSP for custom apps" (Settings, Security and login, App security). The card showed best with it off.
The plugin details show a tool that only shows the card
ChatGPT lists 8 tools: 5 only read your data (Read) and 3 save things (Write). One of them, sprachpass_show_practice, only shows the card. ChatGPT uses it for you.
The audio does not play
If the audio stops or does not start, the card says "Hmm, the audio stopped. Try again?" Press Retry. If it still does not play, choose "Practise this on Sprachpass". It opens the same practice on the website, where you can carry on with the run.
ChatGPT says the access check failed
After you disconnect in Connected apps, or when your sign-in ends, ChatGPT may say "Access check failed" or "The tool failed internally." Reconnect: in ChatGPT open Settings, then Plugins, open Sprachpass, open the menu next to your connected account and choose Reconnect. Then choose Allow on the Sprachpass page.
ChatGPT says the name already exists
If you added Sprachpass before, ChatGPT may say "An app with this name already exists. Choose another name". Use the Sprachpass plugin you already have, or type a different name, like Sprachpass practice.
Today's practice is used up
ChatGPT tells you when today's free practice for a skill is used up. It also tells you when it starts again, and gives a link to the paid plans. The paid Premium plan has no daily limit on Hören and Lesen practice.
