Short answer
To get an A1 German certificate in India, first confirm which certificate your visa or other application accepts, then prepare in that board's exact format. The German missions in India name Goethe, telc and ÖSD examples for family reunion visas and apply a one-year recency rule.
Step 1: choose a recognised board
For most Indian applicants the certificate exists for a visa, usually family reunion, and the accepted list comes from the German missions in India. They name three recognised A1 certificates as examples: Start Deutsch 1 from the Goethe-Institut, Grundstufe Deutsch 1 from ÖSD, and Start Deutsch 1 from telc. The exam must be no more than one year old when you apply, and the missions do not test German themselves; only the certificates count.
The stable comparison is the certificate and format. Live locations and booking details belong on the service that keeps them current:
| Check | Why it matters | Where to verify it | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Recognition | The receiving authority decides which certificate and level count | The authority's own document list | | Exam format | The task types and scoring differ by board | The matching Sprachpass exam guide | | Live booking details | These can change | Use the hand-off below | | Recency | Some applications limit how old the exam may be | The authority's current rule |
Once your authority accepts more than one board, compare their formats in Goethe vs telc: which German exam should you take?.
Fees, dates and centres change; BookGermanTest keeps the live list.
Step 2: plan around the visa rule
The one-year recency window belongs to the visa application, so confirm the current rule on the authority's checklist before you plan the rest of your preparation.
Step 3: prepare for the format, not just the language
The A1 exam tests very basic German: the written exam is listening, reading and writing in 65 minutes at Goethe, and the speaking test is a short group conversation. What surprises unprepared candidates is never the vocabulary; it is the task shapes, like the listening part that plays only once or the form-filling writing task. Prepare in the exam's exact format from the start; the full structure, part by part, is in the Goethe A1 exam guide.
Give the speaking test one real rehearsal too: introducing yourself along the standard keywords, spelling your name, and saying numbers in German are all directly scored and completely preparable.
Step 4: exam day and your certificate
Carry the ID you registered with and follow the provider's instructions for the day. You pass at 60% of the points, and the result comes from the provider that administered your exam.
Three avoidable mistakes come up again and again around Indian A1 exams. Booking with a name spelled differently from your passport creates certificate mismatches that surface months later at the visa counter, so copy your name letter for letter at registration. Preparing only from grammar books leaves the exam format unseen until it counts; at A1 the format is most of the difficulty. And skipping speaking practice because "it is just introducing yourself" ignores that the introduction has a scored follow-up, spelling a word or saying a number in German, that unprepared candidates regularly fumble.
The authority's recency rule applies when you submit the visa application. Read its current checklist before relying on an older certificate. For everything else we have written for learners in India, see all our guides for learners in India.
