telc B2 exam guide
Read the telc B2 paper as one written system
telc B2 has a 140-minute written exam (Lesen, Sprachbausteine, Hören and Schreiben) and a separate Sprechen of about 15 minutes, usually in pairs, after 20 minutes of preparation. You pass with at least 135 of 225 written points and 45 of 75 speaking points, and if you miss one part you can retake just that part within 12 months.
B2 asks for clear, detailed language on concrete and abstract topics. telc adds a language-elements route to the written paper, so the level descriptor and the board task map need to be read together.
The written paper uses 90 minutes for Lesen and Sprachbausteine together, about 20 minutes for Hören and 30 minutes for Schreiben. Sprechen stays separate: you usually prepare Teil 1 at home, then use 20 minutes for Teile 2-3 and speak about 15 minutes in pairs or 25 in trios.
This page keeps exam facts alongside the current product rules. A telc B2 mock covers the written composition when that board and level is offered, while the speaking module still needs its own graded preparation.
Who chooses telc B2 and how to read its component checks
Independent User at B2
B2 means following the main ideas of complex text, interacting with fluency and giving a clear, detailed viewpoint. The exam asks for those jobs through several paper parts.
A three-part Lesen and two-part language-elements map
Lesen has three parts: headings, selected answers and ten situation-to-notice matches. Sprachbausteine has two parts: ten multiple-choice and ten lexical items inside the same broad written block.
Three score checks
The official B2 result uses 300 points, with 180 overall, 135 written and 45 oral minimums. A written-only product result cannot answer the oral check.
A separate three-part speaking paper
Teil 1 asks you to talk about an experience you usually prepare at home. The 20-minute preparation room is for Teil 2 discussion and Teil 3 planning, with an ungraded get-acquainted opening of about one minute before the graded exchange.
A certificate requirement
A university, employer or authority decides which certificate and recency rule applies. Confirm it before you compare centres or call a result ready.
The numbers
The exam in four numbers
The parts
Every part has its own page
The written block is a sequence of three Lesen parts and two Sprachbausteine parts, while Sprechen is a separate partner paper. Practise the written parts in order and protect a second routine for speaking.
The telc B2 task map
| Module | Official shape | What to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Lesen | 3 parts: 5 headings, 5 multiple-choice items and 10 situations matched to notices | Read the response set first, then keep the 90-minute shared block moving across the three Lesen parts |
| Sprachbausteine | 2 parts: 10 multiple-choice and 10 lexical language-elements items | Use grammar, vocabulary and paragraph meaning together instead of solving a gap in isolation |
| Hören | 3 parts and 20 prompts in about 20 minutes with one play for each part | Write a compact claim and evidence note on the first listen, because the paper does not offer a second pass for each part |
| Schreiben | 1 written task in a 30-minute block | Cover the required points, keep the register consistent and use the final minutes for sentence-level control |
| Sprechen | Teil 1 experience usually prepared at home; 20 minutes for Teil 2 discussion and Teil 3 planning; about 15 minutes in pairs or 25 in trios | Use short experience notes at home, then respond to the partner's direction in the prepared discussion and planning parts |

Exam day
What happens, in order
The 90, 20 and 30-minute written blocks are telc B2 paper facts. Teil 1 Sprechen is usually prepared at home; the 20-minute preparation room is for Teile 2-3, while the centre sets local arrival and room flow.
Step 1 of 6
Split paper and product scope
Keep the written paper plan beside a separate speaking plan. The telc B2 mock composition covers the written route, while Sprechen remains a graded module of the official exam.
Step 2 of 6
Lesen and Sprachbausteine, 90 minutes
Move through the three Lesen parts and two Sprachbausteine parts under one block clock. Mark the job of each part before you solve it.
Step 3 of 6
Hören, about 20 minutes
Follow the single-play part routine and write a short claim with evidence. The first decision needs to be usable without a second pass.
Step 4 of 6
Schreiben, 30 minutes
Plan one clear response, cover each requested point and leave time to check the register and endings. A polished sentence cannot replace a missing task point.
Step 5 of 6
Preparation and Sprechen
You usually prepare the Teil 1 experience at home. Use the 20-minute preparation room for the Teil 2 discussion and Teil 3 plan, then handle the one-minute ungraded opening and the partner exchange.
Step 6 of 6
Result review
Check 180 overall, 135 written and 45 oral. A written-only practice result is useful evidence, but it does not answer the separate oral requirement.

Step 1 of 6: Split paper and product scope
Pass marks
How telc B2 is passed
| Check | Published rule | Preparation implication |
|---|---|---|
| Total | At least 180 of 300 points | Read the total only after checking the written and oral component lines |
| Written | At least 135 of 225 points | Keep Lesen, Sprachbausteine, Hören and Schreiben visible in the plan |
| Oral | At least 45 of 75 points | Practise the pair paper separately from the written mock |
| Mock boundary | telc mock composition is written only; Sprechen is separate | Do not use a written result as a full certificate verdict |
| Certificate use | The receiving organisation decides certificate and recency requirements | Ask the organisation before you book or make an application claim |

How the Sprachpass result maps onto the paper
A telc B2 mock is the written paper only, with Sprechen kept separate. When that board and level is offered, Practice mode and Real exam mode share section clocks and exam audio, reveal results at the end, and differ in leaving and break handling.
| Moment | What the product does | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Target | The selected telc B2 target stays attached to the written composition | Do not transfer a Goethe B2 or telc B1 result into this paper decision |
| Timing and audio | Both modes use the same section clocks and exam audio rule | Learn the route in Practice, then check it with the same clocks |
| Leaving | Practice saves and resumes; Real exam mode ends after confirmation | A resumed study route is not one uninterrupted exam check |
| Breaks | Practice continues when ready; Real exam mode treats the handover as timed | Note the mode and any pause beside the result |
| Scope | Written paper only, with Sprechen separate | Pair the written evidence with a real speaking practice result |
| Free allowance | One free mock is consumed at start under the current product rules | Use daily practice to learn the weak written part first |
