Goethe B2 exam guide
Work with complex ideas under the B2 clock
Goethe B2 has four separate modules: about 180 minutes of written Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, then 15 minutes of Sprechen in pairs after 15 minutes of preparation. You need 60 of 100 in each module, and you retake only the module you missed, as often as the exam centre can offer it.
B2 is an Independent User level for complex concrete and abstract topics. The Council of Europe descriptor expects a degree of fluency, a clear viewpoint and enough detail to support it.
The Goethe B2 paper has four independently certified modules. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben form the written schedule, and Sprechen has preparation followed by a paired exchange.
The useful B2 plan is specific: separate information retrieval from argument building, and practise the presentation and discussion moves as different speaking jobs.
Who needs B2 and how to read the module result
Complex but controlled use
B2 is for longer texts, technical discussion in a familiar field and a clear explanation of advantages and disadvantages. The exam rewards control as well as ideas.
Four independent certificates
Each Goethe B2 module has its own result and pass line. Use a low module score as a route into focused practice rather than averaging it away.
A receiving body's requirement
Universities, employers and authorities set their own certificate rules. Confirm whether they name Goethe B2, accept another board or require a recent result.
A presentation plus discussion
The oral paper separates a prepared presentation from a discussion. Practise signposting and responding so the two parts do not collapse into one memorised answer.
A level, not a visa promise
B2 describes language ability on the CEFR scale. It does not by itself decide admission, recognition, employment or residence, which belong to the receiving authority.
The numbers
The exam in four numbers
The modules
Four modules, each with its own page
B2 is easier to steer when you name the job of each part. Collect main ideas, mark evidence, organise a position and practise responses that keep the conversation moving.
The B2 task map
| Module | Official shape | What to rehearse |
|---|---|---|
| Lesen | 5 Teile and 30 prompts in 65 minutes; longer texts, structure and selected answers | Mark the writer's purpose and the sentence that proves it before you compare answer choices |
| Hören | 4 Teile and 30 prompts in 40 minutes; the paper uses one-play and two-play sections | Write a short claim and one supporting detail, then use the allowed second play to verify rather than restart |
| Schreiben | 2 tasks in 75 minutes, with a structured response and a second written purpose | Sketch the argument, connect paragraphs and check whether each point answers the task rather than the topic alone |
| Sprechen | 2 Teile with 15 minutes of preparation and about 15 minutes in pairs: presentation and discussion | Signpost the presentation, then ask a useful question and respond to a different view without losing the thread |

Exam day
What happens, in order
The written clocks total about 180 test minutes, excluding breaks, with at least 15 minutes between each of the three written modules. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are a recommended order, but your centre may set the order; Sprechen has separate preparation.
Step 1 of 7
Choose the module target
Set a separate target for Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. The exam reports them independently, so a single broad confidence score is not enough.
Step 2 of 7
Recommended written order
Practise Lesen, Hören and Schreiben in that order, with at least 15 minutes between each written module. Your centre may change the order, so follow its schedule on exam day.
Step 3 of 7
Lesen, 65 minutes
Start from the task purpose and move through evidence in the text. Reserve time for the final Teil instead of polishing one answer.
Step 4 of 7
Hören, 40 minutes
Use the paper's play pattern deliberately. Keep a compact claim and evidence note so a distractor does not pull you off the topic.
Step 5 of 7
Schreiben, 75 minutes
Plan the position before you draft, then check structure, linking words and task coverage. A fluent paragraph still needs to answer the exact prompt.
Step 6 of 7
Two written breaks and Sprechen
Use each written break to reset before the next module. Sprechen has its own preparation period, where you can make a presentation route and discussion prompts instead of reciting a script.
Step 7 of 7
Module result review
Compare each module with 60 of 100 and inspect the part-level pattern. The next study block should have one observable job.

Pass marks
Goethe B2 module pass rules
| Check | Published rule | Preparation implication |
|---|---|---|
| Each module | At least 60 of 100 in each of the four modules | Keep four score lines and do not hide a weak skill inside an average |
| Written schedule | Lesen, Hören and Schreiben use separate module clocks, with breaks between them | Practise the exact clock and the transition into the next task |
| Speaking | Sprechen is a separate 100-point module with presentation and discussion | Rehearse both prepared organisation and spontaneous response |
| Retake decision | A module result is the useful unit for your next booking conversation | Ask the centre about its current retake route and carry the correct module evidence |
| Receiving organisation | The organisation asking for B2 decides certificate and recency rules | Confirm the requirement before treating a result as ready for an application |

How the Sprachpass result maps onto the paper
A Goethe B2 mock follows the board and level you choose when that option is currently offered. Both mock modes use the same section clocks and exam audio, results arrive at the end, and the mode difference is the leave and break rule.
| Moment | What the product does | How to use the evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Target | The run keeps Goethe B2 attached to its paper composition | A B2 score cannot stand in for a different board or level |
| Timing and audio | Practice mode and Real exam mode share section clocks and exam audio | Learn the route in Practice, then repeat the same clocks for the readiness check |
| Leaving | Practice can save and resume; Real exam mode ends the attempt after confirmation | Use the mode that matches whether you are learning or checking one sitting |
| Breaks | Practice continues when ready; Real exam mode treats a break as part of a timed attempt | Record any pause with the result so you interpret the evidence honestly |
| Results | Feedback and the module result appear at the end | Compare each module with 60 and inspect the part-level pattern afterward |
| Free allowance | One free mock is consumed at start; premium behaviour follows the current product rules | Practise a weak module before using the account's free mock |

Goethe or telc
Goethe B2 beside telc B2
Goethe B2 and telc B2 both describe B2 ability, but the written parts, language elements and speaking boundary differ. Compare the paper before you decide which board to rehearse.
| Feature | Goethe B2 | telc B2 |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 5 Teile and 30 prompts in 65 minutes | 5 headings, 5 selected-answer items and 10 situation-to-notice matches |
| Language elements | No separate Sprachbausteine block in the Goethe B2 guide | 20 items: 10 multiple-choice and 10 lexical language-element items |
| Listening | 4 Teile and 30 prompts in about 40 minutes with one-play and two-play sections | 3 parts and 20 prompts, with one play for each B2 listening part |
| Writing | 2 tasks in 75 minutes | One written task in a 30-minute block |
| Speaking | Pair paper with a presentation and discussion | Separate pair paper with 20 minutes of preparation and about 15 minutes speaking |
| Scoring | 60 of 100 in each module | 300-point result with 180 overall, 135 written and 45 oral minimums |
| Mock boundary | A Goethe mock includes the selected board paper when that option is offered | A telc mock is the written paper only; Sprechen stays a separate graded module |

Questions
What candidates ask about this exam
How is Goethe B2 different from B1?
B2 uses longer and more complex material and expects a clearer, more detailed viewpoint. Its speaking paper has a presentation and a discussion, while B1 has planning, presentation and feedback with questions.
Does Goethe B2 have one overall pass mark?
The four Goethe B2 modules are certified separately and each needs 60 of 100. Read the module result first, then use the part pattern to choose practice.
What is the B2 speaking paper?
You prepare and give a focused presentation, then discuss the topic with your partner. Keep those jobs distinct when you practise so the discussion remains responsive.
Does telc B2 include the same paper?
No. telc B2 has its own Lesen, Sprachbausteine, Hören and Schreiben paper plus a separate Sprechen module. The level is shared, but the board format is not.
Where are B2 fees and dates?
BookGermanTest carries live dates, fees and centres. The organisation receiving your certificate decides what it accepts and how recent the result must be.
Does a B2 certificate guarantee admission or recognition?
No single certificate rule applies to every receiving body. Treat B2 as language evidence and confirm the separate admission, employment or recognition rule with the authority concerned.
Is there a Goethe B2 sample paper (Modelltest) with answers?
Yes, the Goethe-Institut publishes an official Goethe B2 Modellsatz as a PDF with the answers for the reading and listening parts and the marking criteria for writing and speaking. Sprachpass questions are written in the same format and are not past papers: try the sample question on this page, then take a timed mock exam, where your first mock is free.
