Evidence, with limits

Reports built to be checked

We publish the source, the date and the limit of what the data can prove. Anyone can quote a report, and anyone can check it in a few minutes.

About this page

Each report answers a plain question about sitting a German exam, from public pages and our own tracking.

Where our data could not carry a claim, the report says so instead of publishing the number.

On the day the report was compiled, the Goethe B1 exam in India cost 18,800 rupees and the A1, A2 and B1 fees together came to 38,800 rupees, close to a fifth of India's 2024-25 per capita net national income of 1,92,774 rupees. The Goethe-Institut named ten valid exam places, six institutes and four Goethe Centres, our tracking saw dates at eight further places, and the report says plainly which findings it dropped because the data could not carry them.

Bruno's tip. A figure with a date on it is a fact about that day. Read the report for the shape of the problem, then check the live page before you budget.

How to use it

Step by step, inside your week

  1. Step 1: Read the cost section once at the start of your plan and write the fee for your level on your study card. The number is the report's, dated; the live page is the one you pay.

  2. Step 2: Use the climb section when you are choosing between sitting A2 first or going straight to B1. Each level is paid for separately.

  3. Step 3: Use the location section to plan travel time into your final week. For most of the country, sitting the exam means a trip to another city.

  4. Step 4: Read the limits section before you quote any figure. It tells you which claims the report refused to make and why.

  5. Step 5: Treat the report as the shape of the problem and BookGermanTest as the live picture. Check current dates, fees and centres there when your rehearsal evidence feels steady.

  6. Step 6: If a number looks wrong, write to the address on the report page. Corrections are made on the page itself.

Bruno's tip. Fees, dates and centres change on the board's timetable. The report shows the size of the climb; BookGermanTest shows what is open this week.

Questions

What people ask first

Who writes these reports?

Sprachpass does, from public pages and our own tracking. Sprachpass is not connected to the Goethe-Institut or telc in any way, and every report says which figure came from where.

Are the fees in the report current?

No: they are the fees printed on the Goethe-Institut India booking pages on the day the report was compiled. Fees change, so read the current page or BookGermanTest before you budget.

Why does the report not say how fast seats sell out?

Because our own data could not prove it: the booking pages load their date list after the rest of the page, so an early read saw an empty list, and our recording had mistaken those reads for sold-out exams. The finding was dropped rather than published.

Why is there no count of open seats?

The booking pages split their lists across several pages and our tracking could not reliably reach past the first one. A count known to be short would make the shortage look worse than it is.

Does the report cover telc exams?

No: everything in the August 2026 report describes the Goethe-Zertifikat exams only. Our records also cover other boards, and none of that is mixed in.

Can I quote the report?

Yes. Name Sprachpass, link to the report page and keep the date on the figures, because they move.

How can I check a figure myself?

The report links the Goethe-Institut pages it read and the government release behind the income figure. Both can be checked in a few minutes.

What did the report find about where exams are held?

The Goethe-Institut names six of its own institutes and four Goethe Centres as the valid places in India, and our tracking saw exam dates at eight further places between December 2025 and August 2026. For most of the country, sitting the exam means travelling to another city, so the report suggests planning that trip into the final week.

Will there be more reports?

Yes, when a question can be answered from evidence we can stand behind. Each new report is listed here with its compile date.

What does the per capita income figure mean?

It is an average across the whole population, not a salary, and the report uses it only to give the fee a familiar size. The figure comes from the Press Information Bureau release the report links.

Why were the booking pages read five times?

Because those pages sometimes return an incomplete result. Every raw copy was kept, and the fees read in August matched, to the rupee, what our tracking recorded from the same pages in December 2025 and February 2026.
