Goethe vs telc
Goethe or telc? Take the one your authority accepts
No official rule makes one board easier: both certify the same CEFR levels and both pass at 60 percent. Goethe B1 and B2 give you four modules you pass and retake one at a time, while telc B1 and B2 have a written and a spoken part that each need 60 percent, so take the board your authority names, and if both count, pick the format you have practised.
The first question is the receiving organisation's wording. If it names a board, follow that wording; if it accepts more than one, compare the paper and the live seat.
At A1 and A2 the differences show in source choices, shared blocks and writing tasks. At B1 and B2, telc adds Sprachbausteine and keeps Sprechen separate from the written mock composition.
Neither board deserves a universal easier label. A learner who knows the exact response type can spend attention on German instead of discovering the paper during the sitting.
Use this page for the board decision, then open the level-specific comparison when the exam is B1 or B2. The guide pages carry the detailed module clocks and worked score examples.
At A1, compare whether you prefer Goethe's separate written skill clocks or telc's shared Lesen and Schreiben block. At A2, put the reading response types beside the form and letter task before you decide which paper feels familiar.
At B1 and B2, the weekly shape changes more sharply. Goethe asks for multiple writing tasks and its own speaking route, while telc adds ten multiple-choice and ten lexical Sprachbausteine items and keeps Sprechen outside the written mock.
A useful board trial takes one session per skill: read the task instructions, complete one response, and mark the time you needed. Keep the board whose work you can explain and repeat, then verify that the receiving body accepts it.
Do not let one comfortable skill choose the board for you. A paper that feels easy in Lesen may still ask for a different Schreiben clock, a separate speaking route or a score check you have not rehearsed.
Before booking, write a four-line comparison: paper parts, writing job, speaking job and score decision. Take that note to the exact guide and use its module map for the first week of practice.
A board comparison is useful only when it changes the next action. Put the selected paper at the top of tomorrow's exercise, set its real section clock, and save the question you still need to ask the centre.
The same level label does not remove the board decision. Keep the chosen paper in every exercise title until its response shapes feel ordinary.
When you review the trial, record the exact moment you lost time or certainty. That detail is more useful than a general feeling that one board was harder.
A second review after a few days shows whether the problem was a one-off or a pattern.

| What the certificate proves | A CEFR level (Common European Framework of Reference) from A1 to C2. | A CEFR level from A1 to C2. |
| Retaking the exam | A1 is retaken as a whole, as often as required. A2 is normally retaken as a whole; in exceptional cases, and only if the centre's capacity allows, the speaking part or the entire written part can be resat within a year at the same centre. From B1 up, each module can be taken or retaken on its own, as often as the exam centre's capacity allows. | The whole exam can be retaken as many times as you wish at every level. At B1 and B2, if you did not pass, either the written part or the speaking part can be retaken within 12 months of the first results sheet and the passed part is credited, provided you tell the exam centre when you register that you want the credit. A single subtest cannot be retaken alone. At A1 and A2 there is no partial credit, so the whole exam is retaken. |
| Certificate validity | Valid indefinitely. The body receiving it (authority, embassy, university, employer) decides how recent it must be. | No validity period is printed on the certificate. The institution receiving an older certificate decides whether it still counts for its purpose. |
| Who runs the exam | Goethe-Instituts and their exam cooperation partners. From B1 up, the modules can be taken separately at different times or together on one exam date, and each module receives its own result. | Licensed examination centres. telc licenses the centre; the centre schedules exam dates, handles registration and issues the invoice. |
| Example of acceptance (India, spouse visa, A1) | The German Missions in India list Start Deutsch 1 from the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan as a recognised A1 certificate. | The same list names Start Deutsch 1 of telc as a recognised A1 certificate, alongside the ÖSD equivalent. |
Who should pick which
Two routes, one decision

Pick Goethe when
The requested certificate names Goethe, the local Goethe route has the usable date, or you want the Goethe task order and module result model in every practice note. Read the exact level guide before booking.

Pick telc when
The requested certificate names telc, the telc centre date works, or the telc task route is the one you can practise steadily. At B1 and B2, give Sprachbausteine and Sprechen their own preparation space.

Questions
What people ask before they decide
Does Goethe or telc prove a higher CEFR level?
The board does not change the CEFR level named on the certificate. The paper, score rules and receiving organisation's certificate rule still need to be checked separately.
Where do I check fees, dates and centres?
BookGermanTest carries current listings by location. The dates and fees on a static comparison page would go stale, so use the handoff before you book.
Should I practise both boards?
Practise the board you plan to sit. If the receiving organisation accepts either board, compare the paper and live seat first, then keep one board's part order visible.
Does a mock result equal a certificate result?
No. A mock is a preparation signal.
The exam centre sets the official result, and the receiving organisation decides how it uses that certificate.
Is one board always easier?
The papers use different task shapes, but a universal easier label is not a useful fact. Familiarity with the board's response types and clocks is the safer preparation decision.
