Read a personal or semi-formal email with four Leitpunkte (guide points) and write a reply that covers all four in a sensible order. The task also asks for a subject line, greeting and closing. In the official mock test, a friend called Marianne wants to visit your country, and the four points ask which excursions you want to make with her, the best season for the trip, what clothing she should bring and how she can best prepare.

Three common mistakes

1Stopping at three points. Task fulfilment is scored on the count, and one short sentence per point is enough.
2Stacking the points with no linking, or starting most sentences with Ich or Wir. Both cost the top band for communicative design.
3Writing a fine text on the wrong situation, such as declining when an acceptance was asked for. That drops task fulfilment to the bottom band.

How long is telc B1 Schriftlicher Ausdruck?: 30 minutes for one task.telc B1 exam guide
How many points is it worth?: 45 of 300. Per the official mock test's assessment pages, each of the three criteria is graded A, B, C or D for 5, 3, 1 or 0 points, and the sum is tripled.
Can one sentence cover two points?: Yes, if it handles both. The official assessment notes count a point as covered when it is handled sensibly and understandably, even briefly. To be safe, carry each point one step further than naming it.
What happens if I miss a Leitpunkt?: Task fulfilment is graded on the count: all four points covered appropriately earns A, three earns B, two earns C, and one or none earns D. A missed point costs one grade on that criterion, not the whole task.
What if my text misses the topic?: A text with no real connection to the task, Thema verfehlt, is graded D on all three criteria. A text on the right topic but the wrong situation, such as an invitation when an acceptance was asked for, takes D on task fulfilment only.

Do grammar mistakes pull down the other criteria?: No: the three criteria are graded separately, so a weak formal-accuracy grade does not lower task fulfilment or communicative design. Formal accuracy asks first whether your errors slow a reader down, and slips in endings and gender weigh less than agreement errors.
Who grades the reply?: Two licensed telc raters, on the three published criteria. If their ratings differ, the second rating decides, and the telc head office spot-checks grading quality.
How should I use the 30 minutes?: Spend about five minutes planning (read the email and the four points, choose an order, note one idea per point), then write the subject line, greeting and an opening line before the points, with connectors such as deshalb, außerdem and trotzdem doing visible work.
