German level A1
A1: familiar words become a first exchange
A1 is the first CEFR Basic User reference point. Learn what simple supported interaction looks like and how an A1 exam turns it into a board-specific paper.
German A1 is a reference point for familiar everyday expressions, personal details and simple interaction when the other person speaks clearly. The descriptor tells you what kind of language work to practise next, while a certificate still depends on the board and receiving body.
Use A1 as a concrete study target: name the task, make the response understandable and check it against the next level's demands. Do not turn it into a universal admission or visa promise.
A1 is a beginning, not a claim about workplace or study independence. If a certificate is required, ask which board and certificate name the receiving body accepts.
The move toward A2 is more routine exchange and more description of immediate needs.
Try a first-day exchange: say your name, ask where a room is and confirm a time. Keep the phrases short enough that the other person can answer without guessing.
Check four things after the task: greeting, key detail, question and response. Circle the one phrase you needed to translate, then practise that phrase in a second situation.
Next session, use one notice and one short audio prompt about a name, number or place. Finish with two spoken questions so reading practice does not hide the interaction job.
A1 describes supported everyday communication. It does not describe independent workplace or study performance, so keep the next level visible when the first exchange feels secure.
Could a patient listener understand the one detail that matters, such as a name, place or time? If not, shorten the phrase and repeat it with a new card.
Use short, frequent sessions that rotate one listening, reading, writing and speaking action. Stop while the phrase is still clear and return to it the next day in a different situation.
Review A1 with a small record: the task, the support you used and the next variation you will try. That record keeps a language goal concrete while you decide whether a board paper belongs in the plan.

Who should pick which
Two routes, one decision

Use A1 as a study target
Choose one task that represents familiar everyday expressions, personal details and simple interaction when the other person speaks clearly. Practise it across the four skills, then record the evidence that became clearer or more independent.

Use a board guide for an exam
If a certificate is required, choose Goethe or telc at the requested level and follow that paper's parts, clocks and score rules. The level page alone cannot replace the exam guide.

Questions
What people ask before they decide
What can a A1 learner do?
familiar everyday expressions, personal details and simple interaction when the other person speaks clearly
How many lessons does A1 take?
The Goethe-Institut's course model in Germany plans about 75 lessons of 45 minutes for level A1, or 72 in its evening courses. It bases these numbers on experience, and your learning experience and first language also play an important role.
Which exams certify A1?
Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 and telc Deutsch A1 both certify A1. Each has its own paper, so open the guide for the board your receiving body names.
Does this page promise a certificate or visa outcome?
No. It explains the CEFR language job and points to the board guide or receiving organisation for the separate certificate decision.
How should I practise this level?
Choose one observable task, practise it across listening, reading, writing and speaking, then use the relevant board guide if an exam is required.
Is there a level below A1?
A1 is the first CEFR reference level in this ladder. Build its familiar, supported interaction before you add the routine range described at A2.
What is the next level useful for?
The move toward A2 is more routine exchange and more description of immediate needs.
Where do I check certificate acceptance?
Ask the authority, employer, university or course that will receive the certificate. It decides the board, certificate age and any additional rule.
