German level A2
A2: handle routine exchanges with more detail
A2 remains Basic User language, but the task stretches beyond isolated phrases into routine exchanges, immediate needs and simple descriptions.
German A2 is a reference point for sentences and frequently used expressions for immediate relevance, routine information exchange and simple descriptions. The descriptor tells you what kind of language work to practise next, while a certificate still depends on the board and receiving body.
Use A2 as a concrete study target: name the task, make the response understandable and check it against the next level's demands. Do not turn it into a universal admission or visa promise.
A2 is often a useful checkpoint before B1, but the receiving body decides whether a certificate fits its purpose. Keep level meaning and certificate acceptance separate.
The move toward B1 is connected language about familiar work, school, leisure, experiences and plans.
Plan a routine appointment from a short message: identify the day, ask one follow-up question and explain a small change. Add one sentence about what you need next, rather than answering with a single word.
Check whether you handled the immediate need, included the relevant time or place and made the next action clear. Repeat the exchange with a different everyday setting so the language does not stay tied to one card.
Next session, pair a practical directory text with a short voice note. Write the three details you need before you speak, then compare your answer with the original task.
A2 supports routine exchange and simple description. It is still different from B1's connected reasons and wider familiar topics, so do not borrow a B1 score or certificate rule for this level.
Could you change one detail in the appointment, journey or shopping task and still keep the exchange moving? If not, practise the question that opens a repair.
Alternate a practical text with a short spoken or written reply. Add one new setting each week so routine language becomes flexible rather than memorised.
Review A2 with a small record: the task, the support you used and the next variation you will try. That record keeps a language goal concrete while you decide whether a board paper belongs in the plan.

Who should pick which
Two routes, one decision

Use A2 as a study target
Choose one task that represents sentences and frequently used expressions for immediate relevance, routine information exchange and simple descriptions. Practise it across the four skills, then record the evidence that became clearer or more independent.

Use a board guide for an exam
If a certificate is required, choose Goethe or telc at the requested level and follow that paper's parts, clocks and score rules. The level page alone cannot replace the exam guide.

Questions
What people ask before they decide
What can a A2 learner do?
sentences and frequently used expressions for immediate relevance, routine information exchange and simple descriptions
How many lessons does A2 take after A1?
The Goethe-Institut's course model in Germany plans about 150 lessons of 45 minutes for level A2, or 144 in its evening courses. It bases these numbers on experience, and your learning experience and first language also play an important role.
Which exams certify A2?
Goethe-Zertifikat A2 and telc Deutsch A2, also called Start Deutsch 2, both certify A2. Their papers differ, so practise the one your receiving body names.
Does this page promise a certificate or visa outcome?
No. It explains the CEFR language job and points to the board guide or receiving organisation for the separate certificate decision.
How should I practise this level?
Choose one observable task, practise it across listening, reading, writing and speaking, then use the relevant board guide if an exam is required.
What is the level below useful for?
It shows which support or task length you are moving beyond. Use that comparison to remove one support at a time rather than jump to a vague universal goal.
What is the next level useful for?
The move toward B1 is connected language about familiar work, school, leisure, experiences and plans.
Where do I check certificate acceptance?
Ask the authority, employer, university or course that will receive the certificate. It decides the board, certificate age and any additional rule.
