German level B1
B1: connect familiar ideas and give a reason
B1 is the first Independent User reference point. Read the language job as connected understanding, connected text and brief reasons for opinions or plans.
German B1 is a reference point for clear standard input on familiar matters, connected text and brief reasons for opinions, experiences and plans. The descriptor tells you what kind of language work to practise next, while a certificate still depends on the board and receiving body.
Use B1 as a concrete study target: name the task, make the response understandable and check it against the next level's demands. Do not turn it into a universal admission or visa promise.
B1 is a language reference, while Goethe and telc use different B1 papers. Open the board guide before you copy a timing or score rule.
The move toward B2 is more range, detail and interaction on complex concrete or abstract topics.
Take a familiar decision such as changing a travel plan. Explain what happened, give one reason, suggest a next step and answer a follow-up without returning to isolated phrases.
Check for a clear opening, connected middle and reason that supports the opinion. Then ask whether another person could act on the plan after hearing it once.
Next session, read a short report and write a connected summary before you speak about the same event. Mark the sentence that carries the reason, because that is the bridge from detail to viewpoint.
B1 gives you a foundation for familiar work, study and travel communication. The board paper still decides the task sequence, score model and speaking route, so use the guide before timing yourself.
Can you explain the same experience in a short written paragraph and a spoken exchange? Compare the two versions for a clear reason, a useful detail and a next step.
Use one input, one connected response and one partner follow-up in each study block. Track the task you can now complete with fewer notes, rather than counting only new words.
Review B1 with a small record: the task, the support you used and the next variation you will try. That record keeps a language goal concrete while you decide whether a board paper belongs in the plan.

Who should pick which
Two routes, one decision

Use B1 as a study target
Choose one task that represents clear standard input on familiar matters, connected text and brief reasons for opinions, experiences and plans. Practise it across the four skills, then record the evidence that became clearer or more independent.

Use a board guide for an exam
If a certificate is required, choose Goethe or telc at the requested level and follow that paper's parts, clocks and score rules. The level page alone cannot replace the exam guide.

Questions
What people ask before they decide
What can a B1 learner do?
clear standard input on familiar matters, connected text and brief reasons for opinions, experiences and plans
How many lessons does B1 take after A2?
The Goethe-Institut's course model in Germany plans about 150 lessons of 45 minutes for level B1, or 144 in its evening courses. It bases these numbers on experience, and your learning experience and first language also play an important role.
Which exams certify B1?
Goethe-Zertifikat B1 and telc Deutsch B1, also called Zertifikat Deutsch, both certify B1. Check which one your university, employer or authority accepts, then rehearse that paper.
Does this page promise a certificate or visa outcome?
No. It explains the CEFR language job and points to the board guide or receiving organisation for the separate certificate decision.
How should I practise this level?
Choose one observable task, practise it across listening, reading, writing and speaking, then use the relevant board guide if an exam is required.
What is the level below useful for?
It shows which support or task length you are moving beyond. Use that comparison to remove one support at a time rather than jump to a vague universal goal.
What is the next level useful for?
The move toward B2 is more range, detail and interaction on complex concrete or abstract topics.
Where do I check certificate acceptance?
Ask the authority, employer, university or course that will receive the certificate. It decides the board, certificate age and any additional rule.
