German level B2
B2: discuss complex topics with clear detail
B2 is an Independent User level for complex concrete and abstract topics. The language job is a clear viewpoint, enough detail and interaction that keeps moving.
German B2 is a reference point for complex topics, fluent interaction and clear detailed viewpoints with advantages and disadvantages. The descriptor tells you what kind of language work to practise next, while a certificate still depends on the board and receiving body.
Use B2 as a concrete study target: name the task, make the response understandable and check it against the next level's demands. Do not turn it into a universal admission or visa promise.
B2 does not settle admission, employment, recognition or residence by itself. The receiving organisation decides which certificate and additional evidence it needs.
The move toward C1 is demanding longer texts, implicit meaning and more flexible professional or academic expression.
Choose a complex but familiar question such as remote work. Present a position, add two linked reasons, acknowledge a trade-off and respond when a partner changes the angle.
Check whether the viewpoint is easy to find, the details support it and the interaction keeps moving. Replace one repeated general word with a more precise term only when it improves the message.
Next session, compare two short sources before speaking for two minutes. End by asking a partner to challenge one assumption, then answer without abandoning the structure.
B2 adds range, detail and independence on complex topics. It does not settle admission, employment, recognition or residence, which remain decisions for the receiving organisation.
Can a listener distinguish your position from the evidence and the opposing view? Record one place where you conceded a point and one place where you defended your own conclusion.
Rotate source comparison, structured writing and live discussion across the week. Keep a short repair list for unclear transitions, weak examples or answers that stop when the partner changes direction.
Review B2 with a small record: the task, the support you used and the next variation you will try. That record keeps a language goal concrete while you decide whether a board paper belongs in the plan.

Who should pick which
Two routes, one decision

Use B2 as a study target
Choose one task that represents complex topics, fluent interaction and clear detailed viewpoints with advantages and disadvantages. Practise it across the four skills, then record the evidence that became clearer or more independent.

Use a board guide for an exam
If a certificate is required, choose Goethe or telc at the requested level and follow that paper's parts, clocks and score rules. The level page alone cannot replace the exam guide.

Questions
What people ask before they decide
What can a B2 learner do?
complex topics, fluent interaction and clear detailed viewpoints with advantages and disadvantages
How many lessons does B2 take after B1?
The Goethe-Institut's course model in Germany plans about 225 lessons of 45 minutes for level B2, or 216 in its evening courses. It bases these numbers on experience, and your learning experience and first language also play an important role.
Which exams certify B2?
Goethe-Zertifikat B2 and telc Deutsch B2 both certify B2. Ask the receiving body which one it accepts before you book a seat.
Does this page promise a certificate or visa outcome?
No. It explains the CEFR language job and points to the board guide or receiving organisation for the separate certificate decision.
How should I practise this level?
Choose one observable task, practise it across listening, reading, writing and speaking, then use the relevant board guide if an exam is required.
What is the level below useful for?
It shows which support or task length you are moving beyond. Use that comparison to remove one support at a time rather than jump to a vague universal goal.
What is the next level useful for?
The move toward C1 is demanding longer texts, implicit meaning and more flexible professional or academic expression.
Where do I check certificate acceptance?
Ask the authority, employer, university or course that will receive the certificate. It decides the board, certificate age and any additional rule.
