Speaking topics

Real prompts, in the shape the examiner uses

Choose your exam to practise topic prompts in the real Teil order and compare your answer with the criteria the examiners tick.

About this page

Every page holds the prompts for one board and level, each with a reviewed model answer.

Say the answer aloud before you read the model; the criteria only mean something once you have a recording of your own to compare.

The task is Ein Thema präsentieren from five slides, running from the opening question, Sollte man in der Stadt oder auf dem Land wohnen?, through Meine persönlichen Erfahrungen, Die Situation in meinem Heimatland and Vor- und Nachteile und meine Meinung to Abschluss und Dank. The model answer names those parts in its first line, walks one slide at a time, ends with thanks and an invitation for questions, and is marked on Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz with Register, and Strukturen.

How to use it

Step by step, inside your week

  1. Step 1: Pick one page for your board and level and read only the Teil that costs you most. One task type per week is a better plan than the whole page.

  2. Step 2: Monday: read the prompt, plan on paper for the real preparation time, then record your answer before you open the model.

  3. Step 3: Tuesday: read the model answer aloud once, then mark the three phrases you would never have found on your own.

  4. Step 4: Midweek: answer a second prompt from the same Teil with those phrases in your notes. Keep the model's structure and find your own words.

  5. Step 5: Friday: take the criteria list and score your own recording line by line. Write down the one criterion that scored lowest.

  6. Step 6: Weekend: use a Sprechen practice run at the same board and level, then compare the feedback with your Friday score.

Bruno's tip. Record yourself once a week and listen back for the pause before each new idea. That pause is where a connector belongs.

Questions

What people ask first

Are these the exact prompts I will get in the exam?

No. They follow the task shape, timing and criteria of the official model papers, so the format is the same, but the exam day topic will be a different one.

Who wrote and checked the model answers?

Each page carries a review stamp: the reviewer, the date and the status. A page is only published once it is approved and has at least eight topics with eight model answers.

How are the model answers marked?

Each answer names the criteria from the official marking sheet for that Teil: at Goethe B1 those are Erfüllung, Kohärenz, Wortschatz with Register, and Strukturen. Read the model against those names rather than as a script to memorise.

Should I memorise a model answer?

Memorise the structure and a few connectors. The examiner marks how you handle the task in front of you, and a learned script breaks at the first follow-up question.

How is telc Sprechen different from Goethe Sprechen?

The tasks differ by board. telc A1 is a group exam and telc A2 to B2 are pair exams with a joint planning task; Goethe B1 ends with feedback and questions on a partner's talk, and Goethe B2 ends with a discussion of a debatable question. Prepare for the board you have booked.

Can I practise these topics with feedback?

Yes, where Sprechen practice is open for your board and level. Free accounts get two graded Sprechen tasks a day, and each speaking page links straight to the matching practice run.

What are the topic tags?

Every prompt carries one of ten everyday topic areas such as home, travel, work and study or appointments and services. The filters on this page use the same tags.

How long is the oral exam?

It depends on the board and level. Each exam guide gives the timing, the preparation time and whether notes are allowed; the speaking page links to that guide.

How does the featured Goethe B1 model answer open?

By naming the structure, Ich habe vier Teile vorbereitet, right after the topic question, and the first slide's hook line, Ich brauche keine Ruhe, ich brauche ein Café um die Ecke, gives that question its everyday edge. The full model text with its closing thanks is on the Goethe B1 page; give the same five slides your own experiences and your own country.

What does Teil mean on these pages?

Teil is the German word for part. Each speaking page lists its prompts under the Teil they belong to, in the order the exam runs them, so you can rehearse one part at a time.

Which page should I open first?

The one for the exam you have booked, or the one your receiving organisation named. If you are still choosing, the exam guides and the compare pages settle the board and level before you practise a single prompt.
