Goethe B1 exam guide

Make the first Independent User paper predictable

Goethe B1 has four separate modules: about 165 minutes of written Lesen, Hören and Schreiben, then 15 minutes of Sprechen in pairs after 15 minutes of preparation. You need 60 of 100 in each module, and you retake only the module you missed, as often as the exam centre can offer it.

B1 is the first CEFR Independent User level. You need connected language for familiar work, school and travel situations, then enough control to give reasons for an opinion or plan.

The adult Goethe B1 exam has four independently certified modules. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben make up the written sitting, while Sprechen has its own preparation and partner exchange.

This page gives you a format map rather than a promise of a pass. Use the result examples to find the module that needs work, then practise that board and level before you compare dates.

Who chooses Goethe B1 and what the module certificate means

  • Independent User work

B1 moves beyond isolated everyday phrases. You should follow clear standard input on familiar matters, produce connected text and give brief reasons for opinions and plans.

  • A module-by-module result

Goethe B1 certifies Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen separately. A strong total impression cannot replace a module that remains below its own threshold.

  • A requirement with a named level

A receiving authority, employer, course or university may name B1 and may also name a board. Confirm the exact certificate before you decide which paper to rehearse.

  • A useful retake structure

The independent module model makes your next practice decision clearer. If one module is below the line, keep the other module evidence and focus the next block on that skill.

  • Not a universal acceptance claim

The CEFR level describes language ability, while a receiving organisation decides which certificate and how recent it must be. Keep those two decisions separate when you plan.

Exam day

What happens, in order

The written clocks total about 165 test minutes, excluding breaks, with at least 15 minutes between each of the three written modules. Lesen, Hören and Schreiben are a recommended order, but your centre may set the order; Sprechen has separate preparation.

Step 1 of 7

Prepare the four module folders

Keep one page for Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen. The exam certifies them separately, so your practice notes should show four separate signals.

Bruno's tip. B1 gives you four separate lines to watch. A weekly module score makes the next decision clearer than one overall feeling about your German.

How the Sprachpass result maps onto the paper

A Goethe B1 mock uses the selected paper when that board and level are currently offered. Practice mode and Real exam mode keep the same section clocks, exam audio and end-of-mock results, while leaving and breaks distinguish the learning route from the check.

Questions

What candidates ask about this exam

Is Goethe B1 a combined pass?

The adult Goethe B1 exam certifies the four modules separately, with 60 of 100 required in each. You can take the modules separately or together on one exam date, and each module result stays distinct.

What happens in Goethe B1 Sprechen?

The oral paper has preparation and three parts: plan something together, give a presentation, then give feedback and ask or answer questions about the presentation. Practise the interaction around your notes, not one fixed script.

Does B1 include Sprachbausteine?

The Goethe B1 guide does not add a separate Sprachbausteine block. telc B1 does, with 20 language-element items, so keep the board visible while you practise.

How should I read a B1 mock result?

Start with the four module results and compare each with 60 of 100. Then use the part view to decide whether timing, a task type or a language gap needs the next session.

Where are fees and dates?

BookGermanTest carries live centre, date and fee information. Check the organisation receiving the certificate before booking.

Is a B1 certificate accepted everywhere?

There is no single answer for every authority or programme. The receiving organisation decides which certificate and recency rule it accepts, so ask it directly.

Is there a Goethe B1 sample paper (Modelltest) with answers?

Yes, the Goethe-Institut publishes an official Goethe B1 Modellsatz as a PDF with the answers for the reading and listening parts and the marking criteria for writing and speaking, and the sample paper card on this page links it. Sprachpass questions are written in the same format and are not past papers: try the sample question on this page, then take a timed mock exam, where your first mock is free.
