Goethe B1 study plan: 8 weeks to prepare

Prepare with an 8-week Goethe B1 study plan, weekly practice for each exam skill, progress checkpoints and links to book your exam.

Before you start

Start when you can handle connected everyday German and are ready to train the four B1 modules separately.

Because Goethe B1 is modular, let the weakest module take more time without slowing the skills that are already steady.

Adjust the pace to your starting point

You already work comfortably at B1

Use the 8-week plan as written and spend extra time on your weakest exam skill.

Your German is close, but uneven

Repeat the first training block before you add the clock. Let practice evidence set the date.

You are still building toward B1

Add language-learning weeks first. This plan prepares the exam format, not the whole language level.

2, 4 or 8 weeks: how to stretch or compress this plan

Allow about 8 to 12 hours a week, with the higher end used for timed writing and speaking rehearsal.

2 weeks
Use two weeks only for a retake or a single weak module. Do not compress all four modules into this window.
4 weeks
Combine each pair of schedule weeks and keep daily listening plus two speaking sessions every week.
8 weeks
Use the schedule as written when all four modules need a complete preparation cycle.

How to split your study time

Hören

Listen daily and review the distractor that made each wrong option tempting.

Lesen

Train each part separately before combining them under the full module clock.

Schreiben

Rotate the three text types, review each draft, then rewrite the weak parts.

Sprechen

Practise the presentation and partner task aloud every week.

Your week-by-week plan

Each week has one focus, the matching Sprachpass drills, and one honest checkpoint before you move on.

Week 1

8 to 10 hours this week

Treat Goethe B1 as four exams in one: Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen are each scored out of 100, pass at 60 and are certified separately. Refresh Konnektoren for opinions (weil, obwohl, deshalb, trotzdem) for the Schreiben Teil 2 opinion text and the Sprechen Teil 2 presentation.

Sprachpass drills

You can list the 5 Lesen, 4 Hören, 3 Schreiben and 3 Sprechen Teile without the guide.

Week 2

8 to 10 hours this week

Do one untimed run per module and keep four separate scores out of 100. The module furthest below 60 sets the order of the training block.

Four module scores are written down, and one is marked as the first repair job.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Week 3

9 to 11 hours this week

Lesen Teile 1 to 5 one at a time, then all five inside the 65-minute clock. Daily Hören Teile 1 to 4, noting which recordings you hear only once.

Sprachpass drills

Lesen Teil 5 still gets its share of the 65 minutes.

Week 4

10 to 12 hours this week

Rotate the three Schreiben tasks: Teil 1 a personal message, Teil 2 your opinion as a discussion contribution, such as an online guestbook entry, Teil 3 a shorter message in the polite Sie form. Check each draft for a missing point, then rewrite it.

Sprachpass drills

Every text answers all its points, and Teil 3 stays in Sie from greeting to close.

Week 5

10 to 12 hours this week

Speak with 15 minutes of preparation: plan something together in Teil 1, present a topic in Teil 2, give feedback and ask a question in Teil 3. Lesen and Hören now run on full module timing.

You give the Teil 2 presentation from notes and react to your partner's ideas in Teil 1.

Week 6

9 to 11 hours this week

Rehearse all four modules under exam timing and record four results out of 100, not one average.

Any module under 60 becomes next week's target. Modules above it only need upkeep.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Week 7

8 to 10 hours this week

Work on the module below 60, Teil by Teil. A module that already passes needs only short sessions to stay sharp.

The weak module reaches 60 on two or more separate runs.

Week 8

5 to 7 hours this week

Ease off with brief daily contact and one last full rehearsal early in the week. Book each module that holds at 60, since each one is certified on its own.

Every module you sit feels familiar. If one does not, move its date instead of cramming.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Questions about the plan

Is 8 weeks enough for Goethe B1?

8 weeks can be enough when your German is already near B1. If the first two weeks show large language gaps, add time before the timed rehearsal block.

How is Goethe B1 scored, and what does that change in this plan?

Each module is scored out of 100 and passes at 60, and each module is certified separately. So the plan keeps four separate scores and lets the weakest module take more time without slowing the others.

Which week rehearses each Goethe B1 module?

Week 3 trains Lesen Teile 1 to 5 and Hören Teile 1 to 4, week 4 the three Schreiben tasks and week 5 the three Sprechen Teile. Weeks 2, 6 and 8 run all four modules, and week 7 repairs the weakest.

Which German should I focus on for Goethe B1?

Konnektoren for giving and weighing an opinion: weil, obwohl, deshalb and trotzdem. They help hold together the opinion text in Schreiben Teil 2 and the presentation in Sprechen Teil 2.

How many days a week should I practise?

Five or six short days usually work better than one long weekend. Keep one lighter day and protect daily listening when it appears in the plan.

When should I book the exam?

Use a timed rehearsal as evidence. If the format feels familiar and your results are steady across skills, check current dates on BookGermanTest. If not, extend the repair block first.
