Goethe B2 study plan: 8 weeks to prepare

Prepare with an 8-week Goethe B2 study plan, weekly practice for each exam skill, progress checkpoints and links to book your exam.

Before you start

This plan assumes a comfortable B1 base. B2 preparation works best when most of the language is already present and the eight weeks can focus on exam performance.

If two or more modules start far below your normal performance, add language weeks before week three. Do not ask the repair block to teach the whole level.

Adjust the pace to your starting point

You already work comfortably at B2

Use the 8-week plan as written and spend extra time on your weakest exam skill.

Your German is close, but uneven

Repeat the first training block before you add the clock. Let practice evidence set the date.

You are still building toward B2

Add language-learning weeks first. This plan prepares the exam format, not the whole language level.

2, 4 or 8 weeks: how to stretch or compress this plan

Plan 10 to 12 hours a week for eight weeks. With fewer hours, stretch the milestones instead of cutting skills.

2 weeks
Use two weeks only for a retake or one already-strong module. A complete B2 cycle needs more room.
4 weeks
Pair the schedule weeks, keep Hören daily, and protect at least one writing and one speaking block each week.
8 weeks
Use the schedule as written from a solid B1 base, with 10 to 12 hours available each week.

How to split your study time

Hören

Use daily audio contact and complete timed module runs from week five.

Lesen

Train the five parts separately, then combine them inside the 65-minute module.

Schreiben

Alternate forum posts and messages, with a review and rewrite for each task type.

Sprechen

Rehearse the short presentation and discussion from notes every week.

Your week-by-week plan

Each week has one focus, the matching Sprachpass drills, and one honest checkpoint before you move on.

Week 1

8 to 10 hours this week

Map the four Goethe B2 modules, each passed on its own at 60 of 100: 5 Lesen Teile, 4 Hören Teile, 2 Schreiben tasks and 2 Sprechen Teile. Start a list of Nominalisierungen (entscheiden, die Entscheidung) and Konjunktiv II requests (Könnten Sie ...?) for formal writing.

Sprachpass drills

You can describe the Teile and the clock of every module without notes.

Week 2

8 to 10 hours this week

Score a first untimed attempt at each module on its own 100-point scale. Rank the four from weakest to strongest.

The ranking tells you where weeks three to five spend their extra hours.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Week 3

9 to 11 hours this week

Read Lesen Teile 1 to 5 inside 65 minutes, giving Teil 1 the most time and Teil 5 the least. Listen to Hören Teile 1 to 4 daily and note one claim plus one piece of evidence per answer.

Sprachpass drills

No Lesen Teil is left unfinished when the 65 minutes run out.

Week 4

10 to 12 hours this week

Write Schreiben Teil 1, the longer opinion text, then Teil 2, a shorter semi-formal message to a named person, inside 75 minutes. Use Nominalisierung and Konjunktiv II where they lift the register.

Sprachpass drills

Each text reaches its length, because a text under half the required length scores zero.

Week 5

10 to 12 hours this week

Sprechen with 15 minutes of preparation: a short presentation with questions in Teil 1, then a discussion in Teil 2 where you agree, disagree and ask. Lesen and Hören move to complete timed module runs.

Your Teil 1 talk has a clear start, middle and end, and Teil 2 stays a conversation, not a second monologue.

Week 6

9 to 11 hours this week

Full timed rehearsal of every module, each marked on its own scale.

A module under 60 is next week's work, and the rest stay in maintenance.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Week 7

8 to 10 hours this week

Rebuild the weakest module from its weakest Teil outward. Short sessions keep the passing modules in shape.

That module clears 60 in more than one rehearsal.

Week 8

5 to 7 hours this week

Wind down: short daily contact and a final module rehearsal early in the week, then rest and logistics.

Each module you have booked feels routine. If one still wobbles, delay that one rather than cram.Practice mode stays untimed and gives feedback after each answer.

Questions about the plan

Is 8 weeks enough for Goethe B2?

8 weeks can be enough when your German is already near B2. If the first two weeks show large language gaps, add time before the timed rehearsal block.

How is Goethe B2 scored, and what does that change in this plan?

Lesen, Hören, Schreiben and Sprechen each count out of 100 and pass at 60, and each module is certified on its own. The plan ranks the four after week 2 and gives the weakest the extra hours.

Which week rehearses each Goethe B2 module?

Week 3 covers Lesen Teile 1 to 5 and Hören Teile 1 to 4, week 4 both Schreiben tasks and week 5 the presentation and discussion in Sprechen. Weeks 2, 6 and 8 test all four modules, and week 7 repairs one.

Which German should I focus on for Goethe B2?

Nominalisierung and Konjunktiv II for formal writing: die Entscheidung instead of entscheiden, and Könnten Sie mir mitteilen ...? instead of a bare question. Both help keep the semi-formal message in Schreiben Teil 2 polite and precise.

How many days a week should I practise?

Five or six short days usually work better than one long weekend. Keep one lighter day and protect daily listening when it appears in the plan.

When should I book the exam?

Use a timed rehearsal as evidence. If the format feels familiar and your results are steady across skills, check current dates on BookGermanTest. If not, extend the repair block first.
